Brussels Public Prosecutor Julien Moinil has recently received police protection because of threats from the Brussels drug scene, RTBF reported on Monday.

Moinil has received police protection in the past, when he was a federal magistrate.

The first time was in 2020, when Moinil was investigating a large-scale fraud involving the sale of cars. The gang behind the fraud allegedly tried to hire a hitman in retaliation.

Moinil also received police protection in 2021, in the context of the major SKY ECC/Encrochat drug case.

According to the newspaper Le Soir, a bounty of €1 million was allegedly placed on his head by the Albanian criminal underworld at the time.

This time, the threat is said to come from the Brussels drug world.

Since Moinil took over the Brussels Public Prosecutor's Office six months ago, he has made the fight against drug trafficking in the capital a priority, with large-scale police operations on the ground.

According to the RTBF, the prosecutor is now accompanied round-the-clock by bodyguards and all his movements are carried out under police escort.

The Brussels Public Prosecutor's office declined to comment and the Crisis Centre (a government agency) does not discuss individual cases.
