A court in Madrid on Wednesday sentenced former Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti to a year in prison for tax fraud.
The court also fined Ancelotti €386,000.
During his hearing, Ancelotti insisted he had “never considered cheating,” emphasising that it was Real Madrid that had suggested a specific arrangement for part of his earnings.
Under advice from the club, a company was established to enable Ancelotti to receive 15% of his €6 million-a-year net salary as image rights.
The public prosecutor estimated that in 2014 and 2015, Ancelotti earned €1.24 million and €2.96 million respectively from these image rights, which are at the heart of the dispute.
