A man found on the tracks of the Brussels metro on Thursday had been struck and killed by a train between Hôtel des Monnaies and Porte de Hal stations, the Brussels Public Prosecutor reported on Friday.
The Brussels Interurban Transport Company (STIB)'s dispatch centre requested the intervention of the railway police following the discovery of the body in a tunnel on Thursday afternoon.
A federal police laboratory, a forensic doctor, and a magistrate were dispatched to the scene to conduct an investigation.
Initial findings suggest the death was accidental, resulting from a collision with a metro train, according to the Public Prosecutor. The exact circumstances remain unclear, and witnesses have been questioned while efforts are underway to identify the victim.
“In the interest of the investigation, no further comments will be made at this time,” the prosecutor added.
The incident led to the suspension of train services on Lines 2 and 6 between Trône and Gare du Midi stations. Traffic was halted for approximately five hours, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
