President Donald Trump has announced on his social media platform, Truth Social, that he will impose a 30% import tariff on the European Union starting from 1 August.
Trump further argued that the EU should fully open its internal market to the United States without any import duties to reduce the trade imbalance between the two blocs.
He warned that any attempt by the EU to impose retaliatory tariffs would result in an additional tariff on top of the proposed 30%.
