Thousands of people every year attend the week-long festival and its famous "encierros" or bull runs, every day at 8:00 a.m. through the narrow streets of the old town over an 850 meters (yard) course while runners ahead of them try to stay close to the bulls without falling over or being gored. During the seventh and penultimate bull run at the annual San Fermin festival in Pamplona, northern Spain, six people were injured.

A spokesperson for the Red Cross confirmed the injuries to RTVE, a local television network. One man sustained injuries from a bull horn in the groin.

Five of the injured individuals were transported to hospital for further treatment. Injuries are a frequent occurrence at the bull runs. Thousands of participants, mainly men, attempt to outrun the bulls over an 800-metre stretch leading to the arena.

Bull running has been a traditional part of Spanish summer festivals for centuries.

The most famous runs occur annually at the beginning of July during the San Fermin festival in Pamplona.

The final bull run is scheduled for tomorrow, Monday 14 July.
