A planned union strike at the road services department in Ghent fell flat on Monday morning.
The presence of a department head discouraged many staff members from joining the strike, according to union representatives. Although a brief explanation of the action was given in a separate room, employees returned to work almost immediately.
The unions are protesting a cost-cutting plan that will result in job cuts affecting up to 400 civil servants. Previous strikes have already occurred, particularly in the department responsible for green space maintenance and at an educational farm.
The impact on wages has been cited by the unions as a reason for the low turnout. Staff members receive only limited compensation during a strike, significantly affecting their finances. However, the unions remain committed to mobilising ahead of 18 July, the opening day of the Gentse Feesten.
Information sessions are scheduled for Wednesday, and additional communications are being prepared.
