Retirees can continue to work in the healthcare sector under favourable conditions until the end of this year, following the approval of an extension by the Parliamentary Committee on Social Affairs on Tuesday, proposed by Forward party MP Jan Bertels.
Since 2022, retirees who return to work in healthcare have been exempt from personal social security contributions on their wages, with earnings taxed at 33%. This measure was introduced by the then-majority government to address staff shortages in healthcare.
The scheme was initially set to expire on 30 June, but the Parliamentary Committee on Social Affairs has now approved an extension until the end of this year. This extension will be applied retroactively to cover the period from 30 June onwards.
Over the past few months, 833 full-time equivalent positions have been filled under these favourable conditions, according to Jan Bertels, who initiated the proposal. “This not only benefits patients but also reduces pressure on our healthcare staff,” he stated.
