In the Leuven district of Heverlee, a 20-year-old driver crashed his car into a feeder pillar on Tuesday morning, causing power outages to the entire street, police reported.

The accident occurred at around 6:00 on Tweekleinwegenstraat in Heverlee. The young driver from Tervuren lost control of his Mini Cooper, ultimately crashing into a lamppost and the electricity box.

“The whole street lost power due to the accident,” said police spokesperson Marc Vranckx. “Fluvius arrived to carry out repairs. Some residents had their power restored shortly before noon, while others can expect it back by 14:00.”

“Two houses also sustained damage, and their front gardens were completely uprooted,” the spokesperson continued. “The speed limit here is 20 km/h because it is a residential area. Given the extent of the damage, it is clear that the speed limit was not observed.”

The driver and his also 20-year-old passenger were taken to UZ Leuven for medical check-ups but were found to be unharmed. The driver tested positive for alcohol and drugs, resulting in an immediate 15-day suspension of his driving licence. The severely damaged Mini Cooper was towed away as scrap.
