Queen Mathilde visited the ‘Nachtreis’ exhibition by Hans Op de Beeck at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, KMSKA, in Antwerp on Tuesday.
The Belgian artist had previously created a bust of the royal couple, which is now displayed at the Palace of the Nation in Brussels.
This was Queen Mathilde’s third visit to the KMSKA.
In 2023, King Philippe and Queen Mathilde unveiled statues of themselves by Hans Op de Beeck at the Senate at a ceremony marking the tenth anniversary of the King’s reign. The royal couple also collect works by the artist from Turnhout, Antwerp Province.
Hans Op de Beeck creates sculptures, installations, drawings, and films. Currently, at the KMSKA, he offers an immersive journey through a fictional location with Asian influences.
According to the museum, this exhibition is an enigmatic, dark evocation of an abandoned nocturnal park, featuring various characters, still-life displays, objects, and animals, creating a unique world.
The exhibition includes life-sized sculptures alongside miniature or enlarged pieces.
Hans Op de Beeck crafts his sculptures from polyester, covering them in a special grey material that gives them a mineral-like appearance.
