The Iranian government has reportedly agreed to negotiate with European states regarding its nuclear programme. According to the Iranian news agency Tasnim, citing an “informed source,” there is agreement in principle to hold negotiations, although discussions about the timing and location are still ongoing. The new round of talks at the level of Deputy Foreign Ministers is reportedly scheduled for next week.

This meeting would be the first since a ceasefire last month ended hostilities between Iran and Israel. Previously, Tehran engaged in about two months of negotiations with Washington over its nuclear programme, which yielded minimal progress.

Tehran hopes for the lifting of sanctions against Iran, while the United States and European countries seek to limit Iranian uranium enrichment and prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon. Tehran has consistently maintained that its nuclear programme is solely for peaceful purposes.
