The United Kingdom has imposed sanctions on 135 additional ships from the shadow fleet used by the Kremlin to bypass the price cap on oil exports, according to the British Foreign Office.

These ships are part of a fleet responsible for the illegal transport of goods valued at $24 billion since the beginning of the year, the ministry reported.

Two companies are also targeted, one for registering shadow fleet ships under a different flag, and the other for being involved in transporting large volumes of Russian oil on these vessels.

Foreign Secretary David Lammy stated that the new sanctions will further dismantle President Vladimir Putin’s shadow fleet and strip Russia of essential oil revenues. He added that the UK would not stand by silently while Putin continued to delay meaningful peace talks, but would continue to use the full force of its sanctions regime to intensify economic pressure.

The UK has already imposed sanctions on more than 400 ships since the onset of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

On Friday, London aligned with the European Union’s sanctions against Russian oil, which include a price cap.

In its 18th sanctions package, the EU added 105 shadow fleet ships to its blacklist, which now includes a total of 444 ships.
