The Walloon government has granted new environmental permits to the regional airports of Charleroi and Liège, it announced on Tuesday.

The permit for Brussels South Charleroi Airport is valid for twenty years and includes measures to reduce the number of late-night landings (after 11 pm).

It introduces variable airport taxes to nudge airlines towards environmentally friendly behaviour, according to the Walloon government. Additionally, a previously suspended permit for the construction of a terminal is set to be regularised.

The airport described this as “an important step” acknowledging its new operational framework, particularly concerning the management of late-returning flights and noise reduction efforts.

The Walloon government also issued a new permit for Liège Airport. Following a negative opinion from the Council of State’s auditor, the government withdrew a previously approved permit, and issued a revised version.

Charleroi Airport, where Ryanair is the largest operator, welcomed over ten million passengers last year for the first time.

For its part, Liège Airport is the country’s largest cargo airport, handling over 1.16 million tonnes of freight in the past year.
