A court in Tongeren has confirmed the detention of two young men, aged 19 and 20, who allegedly shot a prison guard in his garden.
On Tuesday, 15 July, the prison officer was targeted with an air rifle while working in his garden in Oudsbergen, Limburg province. The man was shot twice during his gardening tasks: first around 13:00 and then again at approximately 16:00.
The first shot grazed his head, while the second penetrated his chest area, according to the Limburg prosecutor’s office. He sustained injuries from iron projectiles fired by the air rifle, but his life was never in danger.
Although the victim is employed as a prison officer, the prosecutor’s office emphasised on Sunday evening that no link has been established between the shooting and his profession.
Local Carma police, covering areas including Genk, As, and Oudsbergen, arrested two suspects last week. Despite the lack of a current link to the victim’s job as a prison officer, both police and prosecutors continue to investigate all possibilities.
The two young men have been jailed on suspicion of attempted murder.
