Three candidates in Flanders were caught using ChatGPT during entrance exams for medicine, dentistry, and veterinary studies held earlier in July, marking a first for such exams, according to a report from the Flemish examination commission.

Two of these students were taking the medical entrance exam, while the third was sitting the veterinary exam. A total of 6,211 candidates were registered.

Typically, candidates do not have internet access on computers during these exams. However, a security breach appeared to allow online access in these three instances.

The students caught using ChatGPT have been expelled, and a formal report on the incident has been filed.

“This is the first time we’ve caught students using ChatGPT,” Jan Eggermont, the examination commission president, told VRT NWS. “But cheating has always been an issue,” he added.

Other instances of cheating were also reported. Some candidates employed more traditional methods, such as using earphones, exchanging coded gestures, or attempting to photograph exam materials. These individuals were also expelled.
