Around 30 Extinction Rebellion activists staged a protest in Amsterdam on Sunday, blocking the Celebrity Eclipse cruise ship as it docked at the port’s passenger terminal to draw attention to the environmental impact of cruises.
This protest involved activists using boats, canoes, and inflatable rafts to obstruct the vessel, which according to the group is 317 metres long and capable of carrying over 4,000 passengers and crew members.
The Celebrity Eclipse was completing an eleven-day journey that included a stop in Iceland. Extinction Rebellion has labelled the ship a “floating environmental disaster,” citing its poor air and water pollution ratings in international environmental assessments.
A live video stream shared by the group on Instagram showed activists surrounding the ship’s bow in their small vessels.
