Long queues have been reported on Sunday at Charleroi Airport (BSCA), particularly at the security checks, due to high absenteeism among staff and an unusually large number of passengers, according to airport spokesperson Nathalie Pierard.

Ms Pierard explained that the airport deploys the maximum number of security checkpoints on busy days like this, but one less security line was available this Sunday.

Only security checks are experiencing lengthy waiting times, while other areas of the airport are functioning without issues.

The spokesperson also mentioned that the airport terminal is generally operating at full capacity. Designed to accommodate around three million passengers, it welcomed ten million last year.

Queues are organised outside the building when passenger numbers exceed capacity.

Ms Pierard advised passengers who are delayed and at risk of missing their flights to contact their airlines on a case-by-case basis. Some airlines may wait a few extra minutes, but others, especially those with short stopovers, are unlikely to delay for just a few late passengers.
