A 41-year-old Romanian from Tielt, West Flanders, has been remanded in custody for an additional month on suspicion of murder, his lawyer confirmed on Tuesday.
Local police in Tielt were called to investigate the unclear death of a 39-year-old woman on Tuesday, 13 May, at approximately 4:45 a.m. The woman was found lifeless in her home on Biermanstraat in Schuiferskapelle, a suburb of Tielt. Despite the presence of emergency services at the scene, all efforts to save her were in vain.
The Brugge branch of the West Flanders Public Prosecutor’s Office initiated a judicial investigation, led by an examining magistrate. A forensic pathologist was also appointed to determine the precise cause of death, while a laboratory team conducted a forensic investigation. However, the exact circumstances surrounding the death remain unclear.
Following the incident, the woman’s 41-year-old partner was arrested. Identified only as L.M., he was questioned and later brought before the Brugge investigating judge, who ordered his detention on suspicion of murder. According to his lawyer, Piet Rotsaert, L.M. denies any involvement in his partner’s death.
It is also alleged that the forensic pathologist was unable to confirm a clear cause of death.
The Brugge council chamber ruled on Tuesday that the suspect should remain in custody for an additional month to further the investigation.
Should the defence appeal this decision, the Ghent Indictment Court will review the case within two weeks.
