Train traffic resumed on the Jonction Nord-Midi (North-South Connection) in Brussels on Tuesday just before 8.00 pm, after a 50-minute disruption caused by a suspicious package discovered near Central Station, Infrabel spokesperson Frédéric Sacré confirmed.

The alert was raised around 6.00 pm. “Our police zone was alerted about a suspicious package found at No. 5, Mont des Arts, in the basement of the Plein Publiek restaurant,” Police Commissioner Linda Camarero-Verde, spokesperson for the Brussels-Capital/Ixelles zone, said.

Patrols quickly intervened, establishing a security perimeter.

“Train services were halted as a precaution, and the Defence’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service, SEDEE, was called in,” Camarero-Verde continued. Police maintained surveillance of the perimeter throughout the specialised intervention.

SEDEE eventually destroyed the suspicious package, which contained no explosives, and the operation ended without incident.

The Jonction Nord-Midi, which passes through Central Brussels and connects the city’s main stations, is the country’s busiest railway corridor.

Any disruption on this route has a significant impact on national train traffic.
