The Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has urged Belgian travellers in areas under tsunami warnings to follow local authorities’ instructions.
Following a severe earthquake on Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, evacuation advice was issued in several countries around the Pacific Ocean.
“We advise Belgians in the affected areas to regularly consult our travel advisories,” explained Florinda Baleci, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She stressed the government is closely monitoring the situation alongside diplomats and ambassadors in the region. Several embassies have already communicated safety measures to Belgians residing in high-risk areas.
The government also strongly recommends travellers register their journeys via TravellersOnline. This ensures the government is aware of their whereabouts and can provide assistance in emergencies. “So far, we have not received any calls from concerned citizens,” added Baleci.
While tsunami warnings have been lifted in places like Hawaii and the Philippines, the threat remains real in other Pacific regions. In French Polynesia, residents are preparing for a possible tsunami with waves up to four meters high. Authorities in Hokkaido and Tohoku, Japan’s northern regions, are also advising residents to move to safer areas.
