A sock worn by Michael Jackson during a concert in Nice, France, on 27 July 1997, was sold for €6,200 at an auction on Wednesday.
The “iconic” item, somewhat worn, was discovered by a technician at the end of the concert near the artist’s dressing rooms, as stated by Aurore Illy, auctioneer for the Nîmes auction house, to AFP.
Illy emphasised that the sock is a truly exceptional piece and a cult object for Michael Jackson fans, with numerous expressions of interest received.
The sock, embroidered with square, sparkling crystals, was framed alongside the technician’s original backstage pass, according to the auction website Interenchères.
It matched the pop icon’s famous glove worn during his “HIStory World Tour” and was reportedly worn by Jackson during performances of ‘Beat It Live’ and ‘Billie Jean’, where he famously executed the moonwalk.
Initially put up for sale in June, the item did not attract a buyer. With a starting price of €2,500, it was initially estimated to be worth between €3,000 and €4,000.
