On Sunday, 3 August, the popular gastronomic event, Hapje-Tapje, returns to the streets of Leuven.

Starting at noon, various eateries in Leuven will offer their finest dishes and drinks at Muntstraat, Hogeschoolplein, Tiensestraat, and Naamsestraat. Every year, the event is a tremendous success, with over 50,000 food enthusiasts attending in 2024. “For 35 years, Hapje-Tapje has been a staple of the Leuven summer, providing a day of culinary delight in a vibrant atmosphere,” said Bert Cornillie, the City Councillor for Events.

From noon onwards, visitors can sample a variety of dishes crafted by local chefs. A panel will award prizes for the best stand and tastiest dish. This year, the Grote Markt will host a cosy food village instead of the usual marquee, featuring 12 vendors serving a range of treats. Collaboration will also be key, as speciality shop Hops ‘n’ More and restaurant Alfalfa join forces for the day.

Visitors can also explore Europe’s longest bar with a wide selection of tasting beers. From local brews to unique varieties, sampling is encouraged at the outdoor bars on the Oude Markt. As part of the festivities, spectators can cheer on their favourites in the bartenders’ race, where local hospitality staff navigate an obstacle course with laden trays. The fastest and most skilled competitor will earn the coveted title.

In addition to the culinary delights, Hapje-Tapje offers children’s entertainment and live music, with performances by Pauline and Belle Perez in the evening.
