A person was found with a gunshot wound on Thursday morning shortly after 7:00 in Schaerbeek, according to Brussels Fire Brigade spokesperson Walter Derieuw, who confirmed reports initially shared by Sudinfo.
The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are still unclear, and it is unknown whether there is any connection to another potential shooting that occurred in Schaerbeek on the same morning.
The victim was discovered around 7:10 at the corner of Avenue Rogier and Rue Alexandre Markelbach. Emergency services reported the person had sustained a gunshot wound. “The individual was attended to by an ambulance and SMUR team and transported to hospital,” stated Walter Derieuw.
The person’s medical condition has not been disclosed.
Earlier, around 7:00, a confrontation broke out nearby at the intersection of Rue Auguste Lambiotte and Avenue Chazal, also in Schaerbeek. According to Brussels-North police (serving Schaerbeek/Evere/Saint-Josse), the altercation involved at least two individuals, and shots were reportedly fired.
Upon the arrival of police, one person appeared to have suffered a head wound from a gunshot. This individual was also taken to hospital. However, medical examinations later revealed that the person had not been shot in the head and was not in life-threatening condition. The other individual(s) involved in the altercation fled the scene.
It remains uncertain whether the two situations are related to a single incident. An investigation is ongoing to clarify the events.
