Gunshots were heard shortly before midnight on the night of Wednesday to Thursday at Alphonse Lemmens Square in Anderlecht.

The Brussels public prosecutor's office reported on Thursday that gunfire was heard shortly before midnight during the night of Wednesday to Thursday at Alphonse Lemmens Square, in the heart of Cureghem. Several shell casings were found at the scene. There were reportedly no injuries.

"The public prosecutor's office has opened an investigation and appointed a ballistics expert. The laboratory of the Federal Judicial Police went to the scene to carry out the necessary forensic examinations," said Laura Demullier, spokesperson of the Prosecutor's office.

An investigating judge was appointed and placed the suspect under arrest warrant for attempted murder, possession of a firearm requiring a permit, participation in a criminal organisation, and possession of narcotics intended for sale.

In the interest of the investigation, the public prosecutor’s office will not provide further information.
