A day after the significant fire at SK Packaging (also known as Servietto) in Merelbeke-Melle, tests on debris show no asbestos present, except for a single sample taken at the site, according to acting mayor Pascal Rousseaux.

“There is no asbestos danger to the residents, so they are allowed to clean up debris and soot,” he stated.

Except for one sample taken from the fire site, all other tests returned negative, indicating no asbestos threat. Residents are advised to take necessary precautions while cleaning, such as wearing disposable gloves, collecting debris in plastic bags, and disposing of it with regular waste. They are explicitly asked not to bring any fire debris to the town hall or community centre in Melle.

The safety perimeter of 500 metres around the fire site has been lifted as of Thursday. This means residents can now open their windows and doors for ventilation, and re-engage their ventilation systems.

The acting mayor expressed gratitude, stating, “These have been challenging times for everyone involved. I am immensely thankful to the emergency and community services for their professional and tireless efforts. Our residents also deserve sincere thanks for their understanding, patience, and adherence to all guidelines and measures.”

The acting mayor also offered sympathy to those directly affected by the fire: “My heartfelt sympathy goes out to everyone who suffered damage. We understand the impact is significant. As a local government, we are ready to provide support wherever possible.”
