A baby Indian rhinoceros was born at Planckendael Zoo in Mechelen, Antwerp Province, on Thursday morning.
This species is considered vulnerable. Of the 2,800 Indian rhinoceroses worldwide, 70% reside in Kaziranga National Park in India.
According to a press release from the zoo, this is the third calf for mother Karamat. After a 16-month gestation period, the newborn tipped the scales at around 60 kilogrammes. It is a product of an international breeding programme.
The zoo has not yet decided on a name for the newly born rhino. Keepers need to observe it urinating to determine its gender. Planckendael Zoo is inviting people to participate online in selecting a name that starts with the letter A.
