On Friday morning, a collision between a tram and a bus occurred on the Bredabaan near Merksem, resulting in three injuries, including one serious injury, as confirmed by Jens Van Herp, spokesperson for De Lijn, to Belga news agency.
The accident happened when the bus was struck by the tram while stationary on the tracks, attempting to make a U-turn, leaving the rear of the bus completely destroyed and the tram damaged as well. The bus was towed away, while the tram managed to return to the depot under its own power.
The three injured individuals were transported to ZNA Jan Palfijn for medical treatment, and emergency services were present at the scene.
Bus and tram stops between Park & Ride Merksem and the Burgemeester Nolf stop are currently out of service. By around 7:30, both vehicles had been cleared from the accident site. “We hope traffic can resume shortly,” Van Herp stated.
