Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned against making any decisions about Ukraine without its involvement, reiterating the country’s stance that it would not cede land to occupiers, following the announcement that Russian President Vladimir Putin and former US President Donald Trump are scheduled to discuss the Ukraine war on 15 August in Alaska.
Zelensky stated on social media, “Any decision made without Ukraine would be a decision against peace and would achieve nothing.”
On Friday, Trump suggested there might be a land swap in a potential ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, with Russia retaining captured territories, according to Bloomberg sources. American and Russian officials are reportedly working on an agreement.
The United States still needs to convince Ukraine and its European allies of the agreement, given Putin’s demand for Ukraine to hand over the entire eastern Donbas region and Crimea, which Russia illegally annexed in 2014.
US envoy Steve Witkoff met with Putin in Moscow on Wednesday to discuss possibly ending the war in Ukraine, with Trump describing the talks as “very productive.”
