Due to an exceptionally sunny spring, Belgium is expected to break its annual record for negative electricity prices on Sunday, as announced by electricity producer Eneco.
More than 408 hours of negative pricing are anticipated since January, surpassing last year’s record.
On Saturday, wholesale electricity prices will be negative from 10:00 to 17:00. This occurs when electricity supply exceeds demand.
Consumers with dynamic energy contracts will be compensated for their electricity use.
Sunday is set to mark the 408th hour of negative prices, with bright sunshine forecasted, according to Eneco’s calculations.
Negative electricity prices are a relatively new phenomenon, appearing only in recent years, mostly during summer weekends.
However, with the rise of renewable energies such as solar panels and wind turbines, they are becoming more common, even on weekdays.
Energy prices are fluctuating more than before, notes Eneco. Between 11th May and 1st July, electricity prices reached record highs and lows in the wholesale market.
