The Flemish Employment and Vocational Training Agency (VDAB) is preparing more prisoners each year for reintegration into society and specifically the workforce.
Last year, 930 new mediation programmes were initiated, compared to 896 the previous year and 828 in 2022. These figures were reported by Flemish MP Robrecht Bothuyne (CD&V) in De Zondag.
“Approximately 30% of Flemish prisoners receive guidance from the VDAB,” Bothuyne stated. “This form of support is crucial for re-entering the workforce and preventing reoffending.”
The MP advocates for prison-based opportunities in the social economy for inmates who are unlikely to find employment in the regular economy.
It remains unknown how many prisoners secure employment after completing their training.
