The body of a young woman who allegedly jumped from a viaduct with her nine-month-old son in her arms will be repatriated to her native Portugal, along with the body of the child.
Fátima Araújo, 32, and her nine-month-old son, Théo Oliveira, died on 7 August after falling from the Remouchamps Viaduct in Liège, part of the E25 in Aywaille. Police were alerted by witnesses, but mother and son were already dead when they were found.
At the time of the tragedy, the family were reportedly living in Luxembourg. Araújo was originally from Rio de Moinhos in Portugal.
According to Portuguese media, funeral services will be held in Penafiel in the district of Porto. The date of the service has not yet been announced.
The Office of the Public Prosecutor in Liège is treating the case as infanticide followed by suicide. No prosecution will take place, but further investigations will be carried out to shed light on the incident.
For anyone struggling with suicidal thoughts, support is available through the suicide helpline at 1813 or on the www.zelfmoord1813.be website.
