From Sunday 17 August to Sunday 24 August, the Flemish Roads and Traffic Agency (AWV) will be renewing the safety lanes on the central reservation of the Brussels ring road between the Quatre Bras and Léonard tunnels. As a result, traffic on the inner ring road, from Zaventem towards Namur and Waterloo, will be severely slowed down for a week, while traffic on the outer ring road, from Waterloo towards Zaventem, will be disrupted for two days.
‘The existing safety strips are obsolete and will be replaced by new strips that comply with the latest safety standards,’ explains Anton De Coster, spokesperson for the AWV. "In order to carry out this work safely, sufficient space is required. Most of the work will be carried out in the evening and at night, as this will allow an additional lane to be used, which is safer for the workers."
‘From the evening of 17 August, traffic on the inner ring road will have fewer lanes available day and night,’ the spokesperson continues. ‘Between the Quatre Bras and Léonard tunnels, drivers will use two lanes instead of three, and in the tunnels, they will use a single lane instead of the usual two. One lane will also be closed on the approach to the Quatre Bras tunnel.’
At the same time, two lanes will be closed in the evening and at night on the outer ring road. On 19 and 20 August, only one lane will be open during the day in the Léonard tunnel and only two lanes between the Quatre Bras and Léonard tunnels, according to the AWV.
