Pedro Sánchez, the Spanish prime minister, who visited Ourense in Galicia (north-west) on Sunday, one of the regions most affected by the fires, announced a "national pact for the climate emergency" that would set aside "partisan struggles and ideological issues".

‘The Spanish government will work immediately so that by September we can have the foundations of this national pact in place to mitigate and adapt to the climate emergency," said Pedro Sánchez, assuring that he would "do everything possible and more" to help the victims of the fires return to "a normal life."
