Customs officials intercepted 88 kilos of cocaine over the weekend during an inspection of a large container ship in the port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands, according to the Dutch Public Prosecution Service.
The drugs were in two different containers bound for the port of Antwerp.
The narcotics were found behind the inspection hatches of two refrigerated containers, according to Belga News Agency.
A batch of 45 kilograms of cocaine was found in a container from Uruguay with meat as its deck cargo, while another 43 kilograms were hidden in a container with meat from Argentina.
"Hiding cocaine in inspection hatches has been a regular occurrence in recent years," said the Public Prosecutor's Office. "
The drugs can be quickly removed by thieves at the container terminal. Customs are trying to seize as many drugs as possible by carrying out frequent checks targeting this practice."
The drugs have already been destroyed, according to reports, and the HARC team, a partnership between customs, the FIOD fraud investigation service, the seaport police, and the Public Prosecution Service in Rotterdam, is continuing its investigation.
