There are currently significant traffic jams on the Brussels Ring Road, especially from the direction of Wallonia. Drivers coming from Waterloo should expect a wait of nearly two hours, as traffic can only pass on one lane.
This Sunday evening, a new phase of the construction work on the Ring Road began. The traffic jams are due to the works on the safety barriers in the central reservation of the Brussels Ring Road between the Tunnel des Quatre Bras and the Leonard Tunnel.
"The situation should ease somewhat starting tomorrow, as many people are already aware of the delays," said Peter Bruyninckx, spokesperson for the Flemish Traffic Centre.
Since Sunday 17 August, safety barriers in the central reservation of the Brussels Ring Road between the Quatre Bras and Leonard tunnels have been renewed. As a result, traffic on the inner ring road, from Zaventem towards Namur and Waterloo, is significantly slowed at the beginning of the week.
Fewer lanes
The number of lanes has been reduced from three to two between the Quatre Bras and Léonard tunnels, and from two lanes to one in the tunnels towards Waterloo. One lane is also closed on the approach to the Quatre Bras tunnel.
Simultaneously, the outer ring road, from Waterloo towards Zaventem, is experiencing disruptions on 19 and 20 August. Only one lane is open during the day in the Leonard tunnel, and only two lanes between the Quatre Bras and Leonard tunnels.
Since this morning, traffic has been at a near standstill from Waterloo to Tervuren. Long queues extend towards Zaventem, reports RTBF. Queues from Zaventem are smaller, with moderate delays between Wezembeek-Oppem and Tervuren towards Waterloo.
A roadwork affecting the lanes in both directions between Halle and Beersel is also causing traffic delays, starting near Wauthier-Braine towards Groot-Bijgaarden. In the opposite direction, the time lost is less significant towards Haut-Ittre.
