The United States is reportedly working to organise a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Budapest, Hungary, according to Politico.
The White House has not yet confirmed the report but stated that efforts were underway to find a suitable location for talks.
Hungary shares a border with Ukraine but has a contentious relationship with its neighbour. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has frequently obstructed or delayed new aid packages for Ukraine and sanctions against Russia in recent years.
Orbán maintains strong ties with both Putin and US President Donald Trump, which could play a significant role in facilitating such talks.
However, Putin faces travel restrictions due to an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) over alleged war crimes.
Hungary announced earlier this year that it would withdraw from the ICC, but this withdrawal will not officially take effect until 2 June 2026.
