Romelu Lukaku has broken his silence for the first time since the serious left thigh injury he sustained during a friendly match with Napoli against Olympiakos on 14 August, in preparation for the new football season.
The 32-year-old, who is Belgium’s all-time top scorer, is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to what has been described as a “severe injury to the rectus femoris muscle in the left thigh.”
Taking to Instagram on Wednesday morning, Lukaku thanked his fans for their support. “Thanks to everyone for the messages these past few days. I really appreciate your support, guys.
"‘Shit happens,’ and injuries are part of the game,” he wrote. “By God’s grace, I feel good and remain positive, no matter what. See you soon.”
The injury rules Lukaku out of Belgium’s upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Liechtenstein on 4 September and Kazakhstan on 7 September.
Four more qualifiers are scheduled for October and November, but it is still unclear whether Lukaku will recover in time to participate in those matches.
