Six police officers were killed and seven others wounded on Thursday after clashes and a drone attack by the Clan del Golfo, Colombia's largest drug trafficking group.

The clashes took place in the northwestern department of Antioquia, where Medellin, the country's second largest city, is located, police and the Ministry of Defence said.

A police official told French news agency AFP that the attackers had "harassed" a group of people tasked with eradicating coca leaf plantations.

They also attacked one of their helicopters with a drone, causing it to crash to the ground.

The Ministry of Defence said the attackers were members of the Clan del Golfo.
