The military high court in Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), requested the death penalty for Joseph Kabila on Friday.
The former Congolese president is being tried in absentia for complicity with M23, a rebel group supported by the Rwandan army.
General Lucien René Likulia, representing the Public Prosecutor's Office, called on the judges to sentence Kabila to death for war crimes, treason and organising an insurrection. He also requested a 15-year prison sentence for conspiracy.
Kabila, now 54, was president of Congo from 2001 to 2019. He is considered an outspoken opponent of current Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi.
In May, he returned from exile and reappeared in Goma, a city in eastern Congo controlled by M23.
