Formula Electric Belgium, a team of students from KU Leuven and Thomas More, has achieved a remarkable milestone at Formula Student Germany, the largest and most prestigious event in the international Formula Student series.
The competition took place at the former Formula 1 circuit in Hockenheim, attracting over 3,000 students to showcase their innovative electric race cars. Each team spends just one year designing, optimising, building, and testing their vehicle to compete against the top engineering talent from around the globe.
Formula Electric Belgium’s car boasts impressive capabilities, reaching a top speed of 140 km/h and accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.5 seconds. Fully electric, it is powered by a 6.8 kWh battery.
This year, the Belgian team qualified in sixth place out of more than 80 participating teams, reaffirming their position among the world’s elite. Previously, they secured an overall sixth place at an event in the Netherlands and a tenth place in the Czech Republic.
Although the final results from Germany are yet to be announced, the team has already made Belgian motorsport history. For the first time ever, a self-driving Belgian race car completed the full ten-lap Trackdrive event.
“Last year, we created Belgium’s first autonomous race car. This year, we’ve taken it a step further with our second autonomous car, making history once again,” said the team. “This milestone not only solidifies our strong position in Formula Student but also places Belgium on the map as a pioneer in sustainable and autonomous racing innovations.”
