An overnight explosion on Kerkhofstraat in Boom has caused damage to the front of a home and set fire to nearby rubbish bags.
Local police confirmed the incident, which occurred between Sunday night and Monday morning. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and damage was limited to a blackened front door and façade.
Authorities are investigating who is responsible for the explosion and whether the act is connected to the drug underworld. Initial findings suggest a type of heavy firework was used, though a detailed analysis is ongoing.
The bomb disposal unit (DOVO) and forensic laboratory were called to the scene to gather evidence. Nearby residents reported hearing a loud bang and discovered burning rubbish bags on both sides of the street.
“The explosion originated at one specific house, and the force scattered rubbish bags across the road,” said Tim Cools of the Rupel police zone. “CCTV footage shows a man fleeing the scene shortly after the incident. This individual is now a focus of our investigation.”
