A 76-year-old woman was severely beaten in her home in Berlaar, Antwerp Province, by a 38-year-old man who tried to force her to give him money, local police reported.
The man, who was under the influence of alcohol and drugs, entered the woman's home at night, demanding money. According to police he was an acquaintance of the victim.
He reportedly lost control when his elderly victim refused to give him money, and proceeded to beat her black and blue.
When police arrived at the scene, he continued to behave aggressively, injuring several officers. Even after he was taken to hospital for treatment, he continued to behave aggressively.
Further investigation revealed that the man had also caused an accident with material damage while driving to the victim's home, and had committed a hit-and-run offence in the process.
The assailant has since been arrested.
