Construction has started on a new onshore power system at the cruise terminal on the Zweedse Kaai in Zeebrugge, allowing ships to switch to green energy by 2027.

The onshore power system will provide docked cruise ships with electricity. A conversion station ensures that the power is adjusted to the correct voltage and frequency before being delivered to the ship via a movable charging arm. This eliminates the need for ships to run their diesel generators while moored, significantly reducing emissions.

The project aims to mitigate the impact of the terminal on the local community and passengers. Currently, the Zweedse Kaai accounts for 5% of CO2 emissions from all ships docked in Antwerp and Zeebrugge. The new system will eliminate these emissions at the terminal and reduce odours and smoke.

Construction began on Tuesday, with the first ships expected to connect to the system in the first half of 2027. Plans for a second onshore power installation are already under consideration.

The initiative is part of Port of Antwerp-Bruges’ broader goal to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. “With onshore power, we are reducing emissions at the cruise terminal to zero while enhancing comfort for passengers, crew, and nearby residents,” said COO Rob Smeets. “By 2027, ‘plug-in upon arrival’ will become a reality in Zeebrugge, years ahead of the European mandate for 2030.”
