In Ghent, the part of the R4 ring road between the municipalities of Oostakker and Desteldonk was closed in both directions on Thursday due to a gas leak. After the pipeline was shut off, the road was reopened in the afternoon.

The leak was found in a medium-pressure pipe caused by roadworks. The fire department and grid operator Fluvius were on site. Eventually, Fluvius was able to shut off the pipeline locally and allow the remaining gas to escape from the affected section of the pipeline.

The R4 Ghent Ring Road was closed in both directions between the roundabout at the Zelzate-Oost complex and the turbo roundabout at Ghent-Zeehaven, according to the Flemish Traffic Centre. The road was reopened around 15:00.

The incident caused significant traffic disruption, and emergency services urged people to avoid the area.
