The Belgian prison administration will start using autonomous drones to enhance security around its facilities, starting with Haren Prison, according to Le Soir on Monday.
A recent public tender reviewed by Le Soir revealed the administration’s interest in adopting "drone-in-a-box" technology.
This system enables drones to independently launch and land from a fixed station without human intervention.
The primary aim is to bolster surveillance around prison perimeters, which are frequently targeted for contraband deliveries, including drugs and mobile phones.
Haren Prison, inaugurated in 2022 and particularly vulnerable to unauthorised intrusions, has been designated as the pilot site for this initiative.
