A prisoner escaped from Merksplas prison, in the province of Antwerp, on Monday, according to prison administration spokesperson Kathleen de Vijver.

The man, who worked in the prison’s technical department, used his position to orchestrate his escape.

"He is serving a sentence of less than four years and was due for release in two months," de Vijver stated.

Prisoners with a record of "good behaviour" are sometimes assigned trusted roles.

These roles allow them limited movement in wider areas of the facility when required, using a badge system.

The escapee is currently the subject of an active manhunt.
