A fire was deliberately set at the entrance of the Social Services Centre (Sociaal Huis) in Diksmuide on Tuesday evening, the West Flanders Public Prosecutor’s Office in Veurne has confirmed.

A passer-by noticed smoke coming from the IJzerheemplein around 22:30 and alerted the authorities. The fire brigade quickly identified a blaze at the front door of the building. Thanks to their swift intervention, damage to the facility was minimal.

Investigators from the Veurne division of the West Flanders Public Prosecutor’s Office dispatched a fire expert to examine the scene. Initial findings suggest the fire was intentional, as the perpetrator set a rubber mat at the entrance alight. So far, no suspect has been apprehended.

Due to the incident, the Social Services Centre remained closed on Wednesday. It is expected to reopen on Thursday.
