The mayor of Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, Catherine Moureaux (PS), announced on Monday morning that she is extending her medical leave, with a return expected at the beginning of 2026.

Moureaux has been on leave since early February following a severe case of burnout.

"In line with medical advice, my recovery will continue until January, with a return envisaged for early 2026," she said in a statement sent to Belga. "The road to recovery is sometimes longer than one would wish, but it is essential to return with the clarity, strength and availability required for a position like mayor of Molenbeek."

She described the decision as one of "responsibility and transparency," adding that "a premature return could have been harmful, both to my health and to the quality of the collective work carried out in the service of Molenbeek residents."

"The truth and the respect for healing time are part of the transparency I want to share with citizens," she added.

Deputy mayor Amet Gjanaj will continue to act as mayor during her absence.

"My goal remains unchanged: to serve with humanity and to resume, upon my return, the work undertaken for a community that is united, fair and proud of its diversity," Moureaux concluded, thanking those who have expressed support over recent months.
