The European Union is providing €200,000 in humanitarian assistance after flooding in Malawi killed dozens of people and affected more than 90,000.
The funding will support aid delivered by Save the Children, including cash transfers and services related to water, health and sanitation, the European External Action Service (EEAS) informed in a statement on Friday.
The EU will also support the Malawi Red Cross Society with shelter items and cash assistance.
The support for the Malawi Red Cross Society is part of the EU’s overall contribution to the Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).
DREF is a pool of emergency money used by the Red Cross and Red Crescent network to respond quickly to disasters.
Schools used as temporary shelters
Fourteen temporary accommodation camps have been set up, most of them in schools, and are sheltering at least 4,369 displaced people, the statement said.
The Government of Malawi issued a Declaration of Emergency in January in response to the flooding.
