The Belgian swimming federation has announced that two players from the women's national water polo team tested positive for the new variant of the coronavirus, Omicron, during a tournament a fortnight ago.

Belgium played in a European Nations tournament in Brno in the Czech Republic from 12 to 14 November where "two players were contaminated by this new variant, unknown at the time of testing," the Belgian swimming federation said.

"The Royal Belgian Swimming Federation (RBF) regrets that these infections occurred, but stresses that all precautions and rules were respected during the tournament. The RBF underlines that the players isolated themselves immediately after their positive test, after which no family members were infected," the federation said in a statement.

"The players showed mild symptoms and are doing well. The organising committee was also informed, so that the other participating teams could be warned and tested. It is very unfortunate that this contamination has occurred, but it is not a matter of negligence. The team and the players took immediate responsibility," the federation added.
