Following Wednesday's Consultative Committee meeting in which Belgium imposed stricter coronavirus measures, the city of Brussels has decided to close the Christmas markets at Sint-Katelijne, the Bourse and La Monnaie.

The big fireworks show at the transition from the old year to the new one has also been cancelled, Bruzz reports.

Traders who rented a chalet will be compensated for the cancelled days.

The ice rink on the Place De Brouckère, the activities in the Bois de la Cambre and all the lighting and artistic installations will remain open.

The City of Brussels said in a press release that they regret the cancellation, “given the positive dynamic this event has brought to the sociability and economic life of the city centre.”
